Update 12:24 p.m.: South Tahoe schools on lock down after man seen with gun

Whittell High School and Zephyr Cove Elementary School in South Tahoe are on lock down while Douglas County deputies are responding to a report of a man with a gun on the hill above the schools.

No shots have been fired and there has been no report that the man, who is dressed in black, has aimed a weapon at anyone, authorities said.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Sgt. James Halsey told the Tahoe Daily Tribune that an aide at the school reported that an adult male, dressed in black, was seen with a gun on the hillside behind Whittell High. The call came in from the schools at about 11:35 a.m.

The sheriff’s office currently has 10 to 12 deputies searching the area, Halsey said.

Warrior Way remains closed.

A school official told the Tahoe Daily Tribune that students and teachers have responded to the lock down in an orderly manner and the situation is calm inside the classrooms.
