UPDATE -4:45 p.m.: Occupants out of trapped cars following Highway 88 Carson Pass avalanche

An avalanche on Highway 88 at Carson Pass this afternoon caught two vehicles in its path, with the occupants reportedly out of the cars and unhurt, according to emergency crews at the scene.

The avalanche, which was reported after 3:30 this afternoon, has reportedly left 6 to 7 feet of snow across the roadway. The road is closed in both directions.

None of the occupants in the two vehicles caught are injured, according to emergency radio scanner traffic.

The California Highway Patrol and Kirkwood Fire Protection District were the first responders. The Lake Valley Fire Protection District was called to the avalanche site but later rerouted. Caltrans road crews have been called to the site to remove the snow.

An officer at the scene estimated the highway would be closed for “at least a couple hours.”
