Utility district chooses broadband provider

Staff reports

Last week the Truckee Donner Public Utility District board chose Eagle Broadband to provide service for the district’s proposed broadband system.

Eagle Broadband, based in League City, Texas, will provide the content (voice, video and data) for the utility district’s proposed system. The company projected it will be able to provide service within six months of signing a contract with the utility district.

In addition to Eagle, the district evaluated another provider – Roseville-based SureWest – and the prospect of providing the system from a district-built headend.

After evaluating all of the options in a matrix, district Director of Telecommunications Alan Harry said Eagle surpassed other options.

The district will pay approximately $15 million in project costs to Eagle. Through Eagle, the district can receive an unlimited number of video channels and telephone service from National ILEC. Eagle Broadband will also provide an on-site staff person in Truckee.

On Nov. 5, the utility district board authorized district staff to sign a letter of intent to begin contract negotiations with Eagle Broadband in coming weeks.
