Right now, I serve as the co-chair with Phyllis McConn for the board of trustees, which was established last summer. The board is responsible for assisting the development of strategics for fundraising and programming for the schools.

One brings internationally diverse performance groups into the schools. They conduct workshops with the children and often have community performances. For example, an a capella group came last week. Theyll spend two or three days with the kids in workshops on creative arts, including dance, acting and singing. The other program is Artist-in-Residence artists who are hired by Arts For the Schools go in and work with the children, often incorporating the curriculum into the art works and teaching the students creative arts.

It began because back in the 80s, with Proposition 13, which setback property taxes, the funding no longer came to the school district, and arts and music were the first programs to be cut. Arts For the Schools is a nonprofit organization and is not part of the school district. Theyre supportive but dont have any funding for us.

I also do a lot of volunteer work for the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation. Im on the grants committee and I provide volunteer support for the program officer.

Hiking, skiing, swimming, yoga.

I was asked to be on the interim board to examine how this organization will be perpetuated. We came up with some strategies, including establishing a permanent board of trustees. Because I invested in the plan, I felt like I wanted to see it through.

My profession is Im an attorney. I am licensed to practice in Colorado and Washington. But I wanted to get more involved here in the community. Truckees one of the most philanthropic communities Ive ever lived in. Im married and have three teenage sons. One is a sophomore at University of Arizona, and I have a senior and sophomore at Truckee High School.

I believe its a very exciting time for Arts For the Schools because of the commitment we have from this new board to perpetuate the organization. It serves an important need for the children, for the schools. Arts For the Schools is a non-profit which enhances our childrens education and fosters a life-long love of the arts.
