Water runoff is next job for Homewood

Runoff from two Homewood Mountain Resort parking lots that state officials contend is polluting Lake Tahoe will soon be filtered to meet discharge requirements.

The Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board transferred a cease-and-desist order from previous owners of the Homewood resort to the new owners at their Wednesday meeting.

The inadequate filtration of runoff from the ski resort’s parking lot has been the subject of several actions by the water board. But with new resort owners, and a deadline to resolve the problems by October, both the water board and the ski resort’s manager were hopeful that the water quality issue is on the verge of being solved.

“We will comply and have these two base-area projects completed by the end of this summer,” said Dave Achey, Homewood’s general manager.

The resort is working everyday on bringing the parking lots into compliance, he said.

The new owners of the resort, JMA Ventures of San Francisco, bought the property in early June. The new owners have plans to develop their section of property along Highway 89 and hope to sell the upper ski area to the U.S. Forest Service and then lease it back, said the company’s president Art Chapman.
