Wave window for the Maverick’s surf contest is open

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (AP) ” The wave window for the Maverick’s surf contest in Half Moon Bay is open.

That doesn’t mean the world’s best surfers will be immediately competing, only that the contest window has officially opened.

Many of the competitors are expected to be at Maverick’s 2:00 p.m. Friday for a ceremonial paddle-out.

When the waves are just right, the contest organizer gives surfers 24 hours notice to get to Half Moon Bay.

The contest ” which has been waged five times since its inauguration in 1999 ” wasn’t held last year because the seas were never quite suitable.
