Weekend forecast: More snow today with break on Saturday and snow on Sunday

The National Weather Service has issued a snow advisory today and tonight for snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches at lake level to 10 to 20 inches above 7,000 feet by 4 a.m. Saturday.

Highs today are expected to reach the upper 20s to lower 30s at lake level and in the mid 20s at the 8000 foot resort level. Lows tonight will dip into the lower to mid 20s at lake level under cloudy skies.

The forecast models are showing the upper low off the central California coast elongating to the south on Saturday bringing a brief break in the snow Saturday morning as the frontal band reforms to the west along the California coast. This same upper low will eject inland Saturday night into Sunday as it merges with a stronger trough of low pressure dropping south from the Gulf of Alaska.

Travel will become difficult on Sunday with increasing snow and strong winds causing poor visibilities heavy falling and blowing snow especially over the passes. Take advantage of the drier weather Saturday morning for essential travel and other outdoor activities.

This winter storm is forecast to bring up to a foot of additional snow at lake level and a foot or two above 7,000 feet by Monday morning. Stay tuned to the latest winter weather advisories and warnings at weather.gov/Reno.
