West River Street will be open for Presidents’ Weekend

West River Street will be open and passable for the upcoming Presidents’ Weekend, according to Town of Truckee officials.

Final construction on the washed out street, however, is not expected to be finished until the end of February, said Town Engineer Jon Lander. He said stage one – reinforcing the bank with more than 4,000 tons of rock – was leveled out and finished this week. The next step involves building a 9-foot retaining structure, which is basically a wire basket filled with cobble, he added.

“We will probably have the basket pretty well in place by Thursday (Feb. 13),” Lander said, adding construction will continue with finishing work – guardrails, new asphalt and reconnecting damaged powerlines.

West River Street will be closed to through traffic from 8 a.m until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until the project’s tentative completion date at the end of this month. The road will be open, however, this weekend (Feb. 14-17) to help alleviate holiday traffic, Lander said.
