Westbound traffic detoured on I-80 near Donner Summit

Soda Springs ” Caltrans announced starting Tuesday, April 15, motorists traveling westbound on Interstate 80 near Donner Summit will be detoured to the eastbound lanes of the interstate.

There will be two lanes available for motorists for each direction of traffic. East and westbound traffic will be separated by concrete barriers. Just west of the Soda Springs exit, the detour will end and westbound motorists will be redirected back to the westbound lanes of I-80.

The detour will remain in place throughout the 2008 construction season and is necessary to take motorists away from the westbound lanes so work can begin on the demolition of the westbound portion of the Castle Peak Bridge.

This work is part of a $65 million project, which includes replacement of the Castle Peak Bridge, replacement of the existing road surface with new, steel-reinforced Portland Cement Concrete, realignment of the westbound curve just east of Soda Springs, improving roadside drainage and replacing culverts, and the establishment of a wetland and riparian area.

The project is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2009.
