Where did the aspens go?

ALDER CREEK ” While working in Alder Creek, the Forest Service is also trying to restore the diminishing aspen stands.

After decades of fire suppression throughout the region, conifers have started to out-compete aspens, and their numbers are shrinking throughout the Truckee-Tahoe area.

“This stand was on it’s deathbed for sure,” said Forest Service Vegetation Management Officer Scott Conway Friday.

Conway said conifers are being removed around the aspens to reduce shade and competition.

“We’re getting sun to the ground to encourage some of the aspen suckers,” Conway said. “We’ve had quite a bit of success removing over-shading conifers and floor fuels ” we get a good response from the aspen.”
