Yonder Mountain String Bandand#8217;s old-time music with state-of-the-art technology
The Dead Winter Carpenters enjoyed tangible success over the last year, selling out its first gig with a cover charge in the Crystal Bay Casinoand#8217;s Crown Room in February. With a brand new album soon to be released and an extensive summer tour schedule ahead, these North Tahoe pickers are still picking up steam.
Jenni Charles (fiddle, vocals), Jesse Dunn (guitar, vocals), Sean Duerr (guitar, vocals), Dave Lockhart (upright bass) and Ryan Davis (drums) play a buzz worthy blend of bluegrass, rock, country and more.
Passionate and skilled musicians all, theyand#8217;ve honed their act both in and beyond the Lake Tahoe Basin for the last two years.
The band formed out of a number of other musical acts in the area.
and#8220;We took our first national tour in June (2010). Seanand#8217;s cousin was getting married in Philadelphia and we were playing the wedding, so we just kind of booked it out,and#8221; Charles said.
The fledgling band toured through Louisiana and South Carolina before making its way up through Philadelphia and Vermont.
and#8220;Since then weand#8217;ve kind of been touring, focusing more on the Northwest, California, and Arizona. We get out to Colorado every few months,and#8221; Charles said. and#8220;I think weand#8217;re looking to get out to the East Coast next fall. Weand#8217;ve got some festivals this summer weand#8217;re pretty excited about.and#8221;
Upcoming festivals include 4 Peaks Music Festival in Bend, Ore. and Yonder Mountainand#8217;s own Northwest String Summit in Portland, among others.
After spending the last few weeks on tour the Carpenters will be in South Shore Thursday night, playing an after-party for Yonder Mountain String Band at MontBleu Resort Casinoand#8217;s Blu Nightclub.
Appropriately, it was a 2010 Yonder Mountain String Band concert that gave the Dead Winter Carpenters their initial opportunity to play on a notable stage.
and#8220;Our first big show for this band was when we played the after-party at Crystal Bay for Yonder, that was exactly two years ago,and#8221; Charles said. and#8220;Itand#8217;s kind of cool that we get to do the after-party down at MontBleu this year; itand#8217;ll be a two-year reunion.and#8221;
While such an extensive tour schedule over only two years of existence might seem to leave little time for recording, the Carpenters are committed to striking a firm balance between stage and studio.
and#8220;We tour quite a bit, but while weand#8217;re on tour weand#8217;re also writing and coming up with new songs for the band,and#8221; Charles said. and#8220;We want to focus on albums as much as touring, which is really hard to do as an independent band. We are a little heavy on touring at this point, but our goal would be to come out with an album every year, year and a half.and#8221;
DWC, Lake Tahoe Actionand#8217;s 2011 Band of the Year, is right on schedule here, with its second album release expected in the next few months.
and#8220;We actually finished recording, weand#8217;re just waiting on artwork,and#8221; Charles said. and#8220;We finished recording it in January; itand#8217;s called and#8216;Ainand#8217;t it Strange.and#8217; and#8221;
