A 500-mile mission
He defied the odds last year, and this year he’s at it again.
Truckee resident and former Mayor Craig Threshie and his girlfriend Lisa Wallace are training for the 500-mile Arthritis Foundation ride, a fundraising event for the organization that helped save Threshie’s life as his body was literally broken by osteoarthritis.
Doctors told Threshie, 49, that he should ready himself for life in a wheelchair, as the damage to his leg and back bones would soon become too great to support his own body. But with the help of new medications and injections developed with funding from the Arthritis Foundation, Threshie’s body and bones have been rejuvenated.
“Through the years that I was actively fracturing, the pain management was huge,” Threshie said. “There has been an extremely dramatic change in my life.”
That change was the restoration of half of his lost bone density in just two and a half years of taking a newly developed medicine called Forteo, and a return to his love of road cycling that is now helping other arthritis patients.
On Sept. 9, Threshie and Wallace will mount their road bikes for the eight-day California Coast Classic Bicycle Tour from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Together, the two hope to raise more than $14,000 in sponsorships to benefit the foundation.
Last year, Threshie was one of the event’s top-ten fundraisers.
“The real impact to me was that I went to Santa Monica to watch him cross the finish line,” Wallace said. “It was such a milestone for his own recovery.”
Wallace, 47, trained with Threshie last year but did not participate in the ride. But after experiencing the emotion of the event, she said that she is eager to be a part of it this year.
“There is a whole group of people for whom the ride itself is part of their recovery,” Wallace said. “It was really emotional.”
The duo will ride this year in honor of Threshie’s 22-year-old daughter Victoria Flamenco who has been diagnosed with osteoporosis as the result of a life-long battle with cystic fibrosis.
