A Donner Party history walk will take you to sites in Donner Memorial State Park and the Alder Creek camp

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Park Interpretive Specialist Gayle Green will lead a Donner Party History walk to historical sites in Donner Memorial State Park, 12593 Donner Pass Road, Truckee and at the Alder Creek Campsite, Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010. The program will start at the flagpole in front of the museum at 10:30 a.m. and will last approximately two hours. Participants will need to carpool about 6 miles to the Alder Creek site.

The Donner Party arrived at this site in late October, 1846, the last of the emigrants still on the east side of the Sierra. Back home in the midwest, they might have been harvesting crops and preparing for winter. Here, it had already started to snow and the emigrants were nearly out of food. Their hope for survival depended on crossing the mountain pass to reach the valleys of California. When they arrived in this area it was too late: Early snows closed their escape route, forcing them to make camp for the winter. On this walk discover how the Donner Party members survived their ordeal and what rescue attempts were made. It would be spring of 1847 before the last Donner Party member escaped the mountains.
