A measure of security…

That a town like Truckee, a seemingly tiny hamlet tucked away in the hills above the confusion, is running a terrorism emergency response exercise is a grave reminder of the times in which we live.

Emergency personnel here have to be ready, just like their counterparts in San Francisco or Sacramento, for the worst. Despite our small size, despite our sheltered location, the effects of terrorist attacks could spill into our borders.

Local agencies involved in the exercise deserve to be recognized for the work they do for Truckee. It is sometimes easy to overlook until we are injured and they arrive, or we become victims of crime or fire, or we spend the night in the hospital.

As we read the newspapers and watch TV news, be thankful that we live in relative safety, away from much of the world’s violence, but also be thankful that in Truckee we have people whose job it is to protect us when danger comes to our door. They offer us a measure of security during dangerous times.
