A veritable feast at Farm-to-Table Dinner on Tahoe City’s Commons Beach
Special to the Sun
TAHOE CITY, Calif. – “Just as important as it is for a family to eat together, it’s important for our town to eat together,” said Douglas Dale, chef extraordinaire who’s passionate about the local farmers’ market and one of the organizers of the very first “Farm-to-Table” dinner served at Tahoe City’s Common’s Beach July 19. About 100 guests participated in the sold out, alfresco dinner event which featured produce from the Foothills Farmers Market and benefited the Tahoe City Downtown Association. More than $5,000 was netted to be used for future permitting, planning and community outreach efforts to keep the vibrant Foothill Farmers Market alive in Tahoe City.
The dinner was crafted by four Tahoe City chefs: Douglas Dale of Wolfdale’s, Scott Yorkey of Jake’s, Andrew Schimer of Christy Hill and David Lutz of Evergreen. The evening started off with wine tasting under the trees with Big Blue as the backdrop, accompanied by an array of tempting and tasty hors d’oeuvres. Musician George Souza (himself originally from the Foothills) played soft dinner music adding just the right touch to the already magical venue. It which was as much a feast for the eyes as the food was for the stomach.
The wonderful wines were from Foothills Vineyards (as a side note: a Foothills Vineyards wine tasting room will be opening upstairs in the Boatworks Mall in Tahoe City). Fabulous bruchetta made with tomatoes and fresh peaches, stuffed cherry tomatoes, lemon infused gravlax were just a few of the many offerings. Then guests sat down to Tuscan-inspired tables adorned with fresh flowers from the Foothills, blue checkered tablecloths and loaves of freshly baked fantastic mystery bread (no one seemed to know who baked it) also from the foothills, that rivaled Acme bread – the gold standard in crusty fresh bread.
The four course family style sit-down dinner featured cold peach gazpacho, fresh organic greens and tomato salad, house made lamb sausage with a medley of yummy sauces, grilled California salmon with dill and pesto sauces, roasted baby potatoes and fresh green bean salad. Dessert was served in the adjoining wine tasting area with another incredible assortment of too-difficult-to-resist bite-size confections, including chocolate truffles, lemon tarts, mini s’mores and fresh berries.
Some of those feasting at the Farm-to-Table Dinner were Joe, Gwen, Amy, and Carly Leininger; Lisa Adams; Heather Lutz; Marilyn and Ron Treabess; Marguerite Sprague; Chris and Lou Basile with Marina Gardner; Jan and John Corda; Cindy Gustafson and Wally Auerbach; Laura Read; Jimalu and Gary Davis; Pettit Gilwee and Ralph Turner; Judy and Dick Lingle; Michele de Braganca; Leslie and John Hyche of Tahoe Tree Company; Lisa and Dave Hansen; Eloise and Slater Cahill; TCDA Exec Director Justin Broglio; TCDA board President Brendan Madigan; Mayumi Elegado and Jose; Marie, Kelly and Bill Dietz of Tahoe Luxury Properties; Carol and Jon Shanser; Lois and Andy Skaff; Carol and Mike Sabarese; Ron Silberman; Kathleen Dale and Jimmie Richardson.
