A vision for Truckee

It’s not often that one gets to use the word “visionary” when describing a person. Ruth Frishman was just such a individual.

While Tahoe has always been a “desirable” ” read expensive ” place to own a home (or a second home, as the case may be), nobody really pegged Truckee as a town that would fall short in the supply-side of affordable housing. But with her laser-like intellect, Frishman was able to see the problem manifesting over the horizon. We all know now how the real estate scene in Truckee has since played ” and is playing ” out.

So with the usual energy that coursed through in her petite frame, she did something about the lack of affordable places to live. She spurred a group of other community loving residents to come together with her to form the Workforce Housing Association of Truckee-Tahoe. Not surprisingly, along with running her law firm she became the first president of WHATT.

And while she may not have agreed with such an assessment, her legacy in town will rank her up there with other Truckee matriarchs like Roxie and Azad McIver.

As the McIver family bestowed so much on Truckee to enhance our lives, Frishman fought to give more than a few people affordable places to call home.

As our town and residents move into the future, we hope people with the vision Ruth Frishman had will step up and help guide us toward becoming a better community.
