Across The Universe: Don’t forget to vote for the Best of North Tahoe & Truckee

In the modern era of Yelp, Facebook and any other online portal that gives people the power to judge others with the swipe of a finger and click of a mouse, running a successful business can have its challenges these days.

Restaurants in particular come to mind. Your favorite local greasy spoon might have the best food and service you’ve ever had, but all it takes is one lousy experience in the eyes of someone having a bad day for a negative and often times nit-picky review to make its way online.

Love it or hate, it’s the world we live in.

Of course, there are fun ways to use a negative review to your advantage. One example I always talk about is the Facebook post made Oct. 27, 2015, by the folks at Fire Sign Café, the incredible West Shore breakfast spot at 1785 West Lake Blvd.

The hilarious post is a picture of eggs Benedict, fruit and a mimosa, with the following caption: “Stop in today and try the worst breakfast some lady on yelp has ever had!

I thought about that post again Monday after Yelp announced that, in an effort to protect free speech, it will begin calling out businesses that make legal threats against customers who post reviews on the popular site.

Yelp will issue the following alert on a company’s Yelp page: “This business may be trying to abuse the legal system in an effort to stifle free speech, including issuing questionable legal threats against reviewers. As a reminder, reviewers who share their experiences have a First Amendment right to express their opinions on Yelp.”

Love it or hate it, it’s the world we live in.

Still, despite all the negative reviews out there, for the most part they are vastly overwhelmed by tons of positive commentary promoting businesses who do great work and provide great service.

It’s with that as a backdrop that I want to remind readers time is running out to take part in the Sierra Sun-North Lake Tahoe Bonanza’s 2016 Best Of North Lake Tahoe & Truckee online contest.

This year’s contest launched June 30, and the deadline to participate is end of day on Sunday, July 31.

You can access the contest here: bit.ly/bestoftahoetruckee. In all, there are 115 items on which to vote this year, including Best Overall Restaurant, Best Photographer, Best Veterinarian, Best Mechanic and Best Date Spot, among many others.

From our ski resorts, to our restaurants, to the people and to all the businesses that keep our community running, our goal with this contest is to help celebrate your success across Truckee and North Lake Tahoe.

After July 31, we will tally the votes, and winners will be announced at SierraSun.com, as well as within a special Best Of guide, later this summer. So stay tuned!

Oh, and as for my best breakfast spot? It’s a three-way tie between Fire Side Café, the Old Post Office in Carnelian Bay and the Truckee Squeeze In.
