American History and Politics | A Sierra College Insights discussion in Truckee

Special to the Sun

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. – Were the Founding Fathers liberal or conservative, Christian or non-Christian? Was there a grand moral cause behind the Civil War or was there truth in the pro-Confederate portrayals which have shaped recent history? What were the economic results of the New Deal, Reaganomics and changes in income tax rates?

Gain insights while discussing these questions and more with history instructor Taylor Tiraterra on Friday, March 8 at Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee. “The Use of Icons of American History in Modern America,” part of the Sierra College Insights program, is designed for community members eager to connect with others in an intellectual setting that fosters conversation and respects diverse opinions.

“Having just come off of another major presidential election, one of the most common debates in American politics is how our history has shaped our political scene,” said Tiraterra, the evening’s guest facilitator. “We will try to sort out fact from spin in the ways that modern media use American history.”

Tiraterra, a well-liked educator on the Tahoe-Truckee campus, has a Master’s degree with an emphasis in American History from Sacramento State. He prides himself on having an appreciation for differing viewpoints of historical events.

To reserve a seat for the March 8 presentation, call 530-550-2290 with your name, number in your party and phone number. Space is limited and is available by reservation.

Upcoming Sierra College Insights presentations include “It’s Against the Law! The Political Power of Dance” with yoga and dance choreographer Jennie Pitts-Knipe on April 12 and “The Red Shoes: Addiction from a Depth Perspective” with Dr. Kim Bateman presenting on May 10.
