These humbling moments prepare us for the day when itand#8217;s our bare ass hanging out of the back of a hospital gown and no one wants to pinch it or see it.

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; A delightful book written tongue-in-cheek by local author Peggy Prescott is a rollicking look at the and#8220;Rand#8221; word: Retirement. A compilation of personal and professional observations, Prescott will draw giggles, guffaws and moments of reflection as you experience her take on universal truths.

Prescott, an educator who taught mostly fourth grade and told her students she was going to be a writer when she grew up, found a subject close to her heart.

and#8220;My husband took to it right away (retirement),and#8221; said Prescott. She however, had a more difficult time. After years of teaching, raising children, running a household, the stretches of free time seemed daunting.

Then, as the dreaded and#8220;Rand#8221; word approached, she used it as an example during a prefix lesson. and#8220;It wasnand#8217;t withdrawing to a secluded place, but retire as in putting new wheels on yourself, heading off recharged for new destinations.and#8221;

Humor buoys you throughout the book, looking at how age makes the journey a bit more difficult, young people and#8220;theses daysand#8221; so different (or indifferent) and the new world, irritating. When Prescott, who purchased a residence in Tahoe Donner in 1994 and spends and#8220;extended summerand#8221; here, describes her attempt to get in shape with an imitation Donner Lake Triathlon, youand#8217;ll laugh. Youand#8217;ll experience alternating waves of joy and a somber look at life.

and#8220;Hereand#8217;s the thing,and#8221; said Prescott. and#8220;We make it harder than it needs to be. The whole question of retirement, that you can do anything, opens up interesting discussions.and#8221;

Seize the day and have a great read. and#8220;Neurotics Guideand#8221; is available at the Bookshelf at Hooligan Rocks, 11310 Donner Pass Road, Safeway shopping Center, Truckee, neuroticsguide.com, amazon.com and barnesnoble.com.
