Assumption Catholic Church gets project approval in Truckee
The Truckee Planning Commission gave the go-ahead for construction to begin in spring 2010 on the first phase of a two-phase project beginning with a new Parish Center and Rectory.
The Parish Center will serve as an interim church with seating for 300 parishioners, meeting rooms and offices to replace the undersized Assumption Catholic Church in downtown Truckee. A separate rectory will be built on the western edge of the eight-acre parcel, located within the boundaries of Grayand#8217;s Crossing, near the northwest corner of Highway 89 North and Alder Drive.
The parcel of land was donated by East West Partners, owners of Grayand#8217;s Crossing development, in the summer of 2007. The land is across the street from Alder Creek Middle School, bordered by natural meadow and open forest.
Assumption Church pastor Father Matt Blank says that even though there is a lot of nostalgia around the original church, there is a practical need for a new building because the parish is growing. The new parish center will also facilitate weddings, funerals and other religious events.
and#8220;Weand#8217;re really excited about the project, even though weand#8217;re roughly $2 million shy of our goal for the first phase,and#8221; he said. According to Father Matt, the building fund has reached about $3.6 million of the total $5.7 million total cost for the initial project.
and#8220;Truckee is growing and the church is very crowded. It will make seating more comfortable and the office will be connected to the church in a beautiful location with attractive views.and#8221;
As a new administrator, the parish expansion is in Father Mattand#8217;s hands to complete.
and#8220;The project was started by Father Stanley Poltorak about 14 years ago when he was assigned to Assumption Church. The bishop gave him the task of building a new church, and for the past decade the parishioners have worked hard to make that happen.and#8221;
Phase two will include the actual church building which will accommodate up to 500 parishioners. At that time, the Parish Center will be utilized as a gathering space for church receptions, education classes, and other social events.
Completion of the first phase is expected by spring of 2011. Planning and design of the Assumption Church project is being managed by Ronald Larkins and David Bourke of Ward-Young Architecture and Planning.
