Azad McIver celebrates 95 years

Friends and family gathered to celebrate Azad “Victoria” McIver’s 95th birthday last Sunday. Partygoers were thankful for the warm weather that allowed McIver and friends to celebrate outside on the lawn. A picnic lunch was set up, and well-wishers stopped by throughout the afternoon to wish McIver a happy birthday.

McIver attributes her good health to the hard work she did in and around Truckee in her youth.

“I had to work hard when I was young, and that’s why I’ve lived so long,” McIver said. “I still feel great, thank God, and I have good health.”

Joining McIver for her birthday celebration were many local friends and relatives. McIver’s niece Yvonne Ring, whom McIver raised after Ring’s mother passed away when Ring was 3 years old, made the trip from Auburn to wish McIver a happy birthday.

Ring, who moved from Truckee to Auburn in 1942, reminisced about her youth in Truckee, saying “This is a wonderful town and it always has been, even when we were growing up.”

Also in attendance were McIver’s great niece Kelly Orsoline from Pleasant Grove, Calif.; Pat Reeve, McIver’s next-door neighbor and longtime friend; and Gail Thomas and Flo Cassels, McIver’s caretakers.

Many other guests stopped by throughout the day D more than 35 by the time the party ended D and McIver was happy to see so many of the people who make Truckee the tight-knit community that it is.

Don Rogers: That sieve, memory

An older friend I made when I began here in 2016 called the other day to talk about the paper. I hadn’t heard from her in awhile and, well, I’ve been here just long enough…
