Barry Triestman: Can we fix traffic congestion at Squaw, Alpine?

I’m sitting here in the Squaw Valley parking lot at 6:20 on a Monday night of MLK weekend a bit bewildered.

The lanes to get out of the parking lot are filled with cars and with their brake lights on because they’re not really moving. I don’t understand why are traffic is so bad.

Google is telling me it’s going to take me a couple hours to get home. Interstate 80 is open in both directions so things should be clearing out, but they’re not. I ended up parking at Squaw Valley this morning and, because the lines were so long, decided to take the shuttle over to Alpine Meadows and have a nice mellow experience there and I did.

At about 1 p.m., I tried to come back to Squaw Valley because there should be a lull in traffic. I took the shuttle and we got down to the end of the Alpine Meadows, where road traffic was stopped. Myself and four other skiers in our ski boots carrying our skis got out of the shuttle bus and walked from the bottom of Alpine Meadows Road to the bottom Squaw Valley Road — and we were faster than the shuttle because of the traffic being backed up from Truckee.

I am perplexed. I don’t understand. Can we fix this? More people directing traffic, a better traffic flow more public transportation, something.

Wow this is ridiculous.
