Biz profile: High Camp Home offers laid-back mountain style
Interior design isn’t just for the rich and privileged – at least that’s how Diana Vincent wants Truckee-ites to feel when they walk into her store, High Camp Home.
“One of the biggest things for us is to keep design accessible,” said Vincent, enjoying a mellow Monday after the weekend rush inside her Truckee business. “I would want anyone in town to walk in the store and find there’s something for them.”
From handbags to sofas, people will find resort-lifestyle wares in Vincent’s shop, but they won’t find bear heads and antler chandeliers. Vincent said she tries to be careful to pick pieces for her showroom that are “sustainable,” that is they won’t be out of style in a year.
High Camp Home’s inventory is eclectic, warm and welcoming, and it’s also expanding. Vincent’s original vision for High Camp Home, located on the corner of Northwoods and Donner Pass Road, was a small space to work on designs with clients with a little bit of retail.
“It kind of hit us sideways. I went into this thinking retail wouldn’t be a part of this,” Vincent said. “We just knew within two weeks of opening our doors that the retail part was going to be huge.”
One and a half years later, High Camp Home has a four-person design staff, and it expanded into Scrap’s space, when the dog bakery moved to Brickelltown.
Despite its larger retail presence, High Camp Home still offers design consultation, space planning, wall finishes, flooring material, fabrics and furnishing.
Vincent also offers one-of-a-kind pieces from local artisans and antiques in her consistently changing inventory. With Vincent’s large warehouse stash, High Camp Home does staging for home resale.
And the expansion isn’t complete; Vincent said she has her eye on a second location in the North Tahoe area. But, her biggest interest for now is to continue getting locals into her Truckee store.
“It is accessible to people,” Vincent said. “It’s not the old concept of interior design where people feel intimidated – that’s just not my style.”
High Camp Home is located at 11890 Donner Pass Road. Call 586-6866 for more information.
