Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe holds third annual Thanksgiving feast
KINGS BEACH, Calif. -Question: What do the following individuals, elected officials, restaurants, corporations and organization have in common? The Ritz-Carlton, County Supervisor Jennifer Montgomery, Kim Jennings, Ellen and Alan Castator, Roger and Betsy Peterson, Wendy Cole, Jim Cole, Blue Onion, Athiwan Yaemmuan, Chef Jacob Bird, Alexis Prochko, Board of Directors and Staff of the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe. Answer: All united their efforts to support the Boys & Girls Club’s goal of serving 500 fresh, homemade holiday meals at its Third Annual Thanksgiving family night dinner. With 20 turkeys and 10 hams donated, fixings prepared by Club Chef Christin Wilcox and Chef Jacob Bird and the carving skill of the culinary team of the Ritz-Carlton, the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe reached out to community for a successful and fun family evening. Ritz-Carlton “Community Footprint” volunteers staffed youth activity stations and helped served meals; Club staff and board of directors cleared tables and washed dishes making for a jovial crew to host Club and community families and many of its nonprofit partners and friends. The event was held in the gymnasium of the Club’s Kings Beach facility. “Our kids love it, our families love it and we love it,” said Mindy Carbajal, the Club’s director of operations. “Thanksgiving is a great time to bring our community together and we plan to do it again next year.” The holiday celebration has grown each year since 2009, serving 350 in 2010 and nearly 500 in 2011. The Club plans to make this an annual event. Donated turkeys and hams were accompanied by cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean and mushroom casserole, cranberry sauce, all fresh and homemade in the Club’s kitchen. The Ritz-Carlton prepared and donated apple, pumpkin and pecan pies for 500 people. Club Board President John Neary said, “The third annual Thanksgiving feast was clearly a success. Located in Kings Beach, the organization is dedicated to promoting and enhancing youth development by instilling a sense of belonging, usefulness, competence and influence. The Club’s impressive building built through community support and adjacent to the Kings Beach Elementary School is where youth daily experience academic support and enrichment activities in five core areas: Education & Career Development, Health & Life Skills; Sports & Recreation; the Arts and Character & Development. Formed in 1997, the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe is a non-profit youth development organization located in Kings Beach. The Club offers before- and after-school programs and activities, holiday programs, summer camps and sports leagues for children 5-18. The cost of membership is purposefully kept low, at $50 per year to allow all children the opportunity to have a safe, positive place to learn and grow.
