‘Buy local’ kicks off Nov. 27 in Tahoe City with ‘Small Business Saturday’

TAHOE CITY, Calif. – We should do it every week. Some of us say we’re going to do it, but often never follow through. Most of us site higher prices, lack of selection, short hours or various other factors as reasons not to. In spite of all the excuses the simple fact remains that our local merchants, restaurants and retailers need our support, now more than ever.

Whether you live in Incline, Kings Beach, Tahoe City, down the West Shore, Olympic Valley or Truckee I strongly encourage a venture into your downtown business district this weekend to kick off National Buy Local Week and celebrate Small Business Saturday.

All five local Tahoe/Truckee business associations and both the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating Buy Local again this holiday season to educate people about the benefits of shopping locally and to encourage shopping at locally owned and independent stores.

Last year more than $30,000 was spent at local merchants through the North Shore Holiday Shop Local program and countless more was invested in our favorite restaurants, retailers and hometown shops thanks the unified adoption of the 3/50 Project. (www.the350project.net)

Let’s keep the momentum going strong again this season. Did you know that according to Institute for Local Self Reliance for every $100 you spend locally $68 is reinvested in your community through payroll, taxes and other expenditures?

Shopping local doesn’t have cost your more or burden your already busy schedule. It’s as simple as buying your gift wrap and bows in town instead of venturing down the hill. It’s that extra coffee you share with a friend after work in downtown versus heading straight home. It’s a locally made, hand-crafted gift or artisan piece instead of another tie or gift certificate that will never get used.

This holiday let’s give thanks that we have such vibrant communities and support the plethora of local speciality shops and absolutely unique places to dine and enjoy an evening with friends that exist right around the corner.

For more information on how you can support local business this holiday season visit the national programs at http://www.the350project.net or check with your local business association of chamber of commerce.
