Check out local timber trestles with the Truckee Donner Railroad Society
The Truckee Donner Railroad Society invites you to a tour of logging railroad trestles and roadbeds north of Truckee. Visit logging railroad routes, roadbeds and trestle locations of the Truckee Lumber Co., Crown Willamette Paper Co., Hobart Estates (aka The Sierra Nevada Wood andamp; Lumber Co.), Boca andamp; Loyalton Railroad. (later Clover Valley Lumber Co.) and Verdi Lumber Co. andamp;#8212; time, weather and attitudes permitting. The tour is planned for Saturday, Aug. 1, beginning at 10 a.m. Meet at the Truckee Chamber of Commerce, the old depot, in downtown Truckee.The trip will involve travel on 40 to 50 miles of paved highway, U.S. Forest Service system roads, some rather doubtful four-wheel-drive trails and old railroad roadbed. It will be warm, dusty and perhaps thundershowery. Please bring food and drink for lunch and a long afternoon and total time will be five to seven hours. Cameras are recommended. Cell phones may become useful for regrouping.Ask questions, take photo opportunities, indulge in passionate railroad history debates and see wildflowers and wildlife. For Truckee Donner Railroad Society members the tour is free. A variety of membership levels are available: Life Membership is $500. Annual memberships are: Business Membership, $100; Family Membership, $65; Individual, $25. For nonmembers, donations are encouraged but not required. All proceeds collected go toward the development of the Truckee Railroad Museum andamp;#8212; the Caboose! Myrickandamp;#8217;s andamp;#8220;Railroads of Nevada and Eastern California,andamp;#8221; Volume I, bookstores and the Truckee Library. Pages 416-453, Logging Railroads andamp;#8212; Lake Tahoe and Truckee River Basin; pages 398-409, Boca and Loyalton Railroad and pages 410-415, Verdi Lumber Company. This will help you prepare for the Tour (and the test). 3. Wear hiking gear; good boots or hiking shoes are a must for this backwoods adventure of a couple of miles broken into smaller segments.
