Cheers and Jeers

CHEERS to the Town of Truckee, which recently received the Helen Putnam Award of Excellence at the League of California Cities.

The award recognizes the achievements and unique contributions made by California cities to their residents and business community. Specifically, it was presented for the town’s efforts to deal with a long standing road maintenance problem through reducing road maintenance costs with the adoption of a Town Charter and through residents’ passage of a half cent sales tax for road maintenance.

CHEERS to all who participated in the construction of the multipurpose field next to Surprise Stadium, including the Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District, area businesses and community volunteers. Space for outdoor athletics is at a premium in Truckee, and your efforts are appreciated.

JEERS to the Sacramento office of the Federal Highway Administration, which recently rejected Truckee’s proposal to retain on and off ramps at Highway 89 North following construction of the Highway 267 bypass. The Highway 89 ramps provide a vital and convenient access to Truckee’s downtown for motorists on Interstate 80, and should not be eliminated because of petty bureaucratic rules. It is imperative that the community stand united in support for retaining the ramps.
