Child Development Conference in Truckee May 21: Growing, laughing, learning

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; The Eighth annual Child Development Conference is coming right up Saturday, May 21, 2011. This event promises another great opportunity to learn and be inspired by cutting-edge research and gain practical take-home strategies for the care and education of children birth to six. The conference will include a dynamic keynote presentation, 13 workshops from which to choose, Continental breakfast and lunch catered by Wild Cherries, complimentary resource bags and a raffle. –

Keynote speakers Lorraine Weatherspoon and Susan Hudnall from the California Department of Education and California Preschool Instructional Network will present research-based activities that promote oral language development and literacy in young children. These skills are the foundation for learning and school success.

Research has shown the number of vocabulary words a child has learned by kindergarten is the predictor of academic success in the third grade. Everyone attending the conference will receive a language and literacy handbook full of fun strategies to develop oral language, vocabulary and communication for their children. Weatherspoon and Hudnall will also present a workshop on extending and enriching reading with children that expands children’s vocabulary, social competence overall comprehension.

Other workshops include: and#8220;Just for Dads,and#8221; and#8220;Cultivating Adventurous Eaters,and#8221; and#8220;Mindful Parenting,and#8221; and#8220;Bringing Books to Life,and#8221; and#8220;Inquiry Science,and#8221; and#8220;All About Parent Co-ops,and#8221; and#8220;Immediate Parenting Solutions,and#8221; and and#8220;Little Communicators and#8212; Language Development in Infants and Toddlers.and#8221; Sierra College dean and award-winning presenter, Dr. Kim Bateman, will offer a peek into the fantastical world view of children in her workshop, and#8220;There’s a Fox Under My Bed.and#8221;
