Choices Transitional Services: Open house shows off new digs, dancing feet and community support in Truckee
TRUCKEE, Calif. andamp;#8212; Choices Transitional Services, a nonprofit providing services for adults with developmental disabilities held an open house to show off their new digs at 11025 Pioneer Trail Road in Truckee Friday.Choices relocated from a smaller, warehouse-style area within the same complex to the airy new location with multi-colored brown, orange and tan walls, several rooms and windows to let the sun shine in.andamp;#8220;When I walked in, I could feel the creative energy,andamp;#8221; said Joy Stern, a visiting Cameron Park program director whose impetus is art.The cluster of rooms was filled with community members, a bountiful buffet and clients dancing.andamp;#8220;The community support, from the food and treats to the visitors is lovely to see,andamp;#8221; said Allyson Howard, program director from Truckee to Elk Grove, Calif. andamp;#8220;Everyone who was invited stopped by, from the recreation department to school representatives. You can tell this community is really close.andamp;#8221;Choices day program is about teaching clients functional life skills, from money management and shopping to cooking. Melissa Caboara, Choices program manager and former special education teacher said: andamp;#8220;The clients facilitated and organized this event. They met with business owners and communicated their needs, with overwhelming success.andamp;#8221; In addition to donated food and beverages, the clients prepared and served garlic humus with pita wedges, cheese and crackers and a crock pot of saucy cocktail weenies. Families brought fruit salad, enchiladas and Halloween Rice Krispie treats.It took about a month of preparation, with the group working intensely for the last week. Usually the week finds them at the gym, volunteering for the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe, the Sierra Teen Education andamp; Parenting Program and at Sierra Senior lunches. At the open house, Morgan and Akiko, local musicians, performed flute, piano, guitar and vocals. Later, the house was rocking with boombox tunes and dancing feet.Avenues, the newly acquired name for the program, is apt. andamp;#8220;We facilitate the individuals, helping them to develop goals,andamp;#8221; said Caboara. In this person-centered curriculum, Caboara and staff help individuals weigh options. andamp;#8220;They might not be the ones we would choose, but natural consequences are learning tools, too.andamp;#8221; Choices employees and clients were overwhelmed by the communityandamp;#8217;s generosity and thanks all those individuals and businesses who donated to the event.
