The Truckee Donner Recreation and Park Districtand#8217;s new Recreation Center is open for all. The 40,000 square foot building houses an impressive 29-foot tall climbing wall, complete with four top rope setups, and a 12 x 18-foot bouldering wall with routes ranging from beginner to advanced.

Rock climbing is equally physical, mental and technical. There are many health benefits including increased endurance, flexibility, balance and an all around full body workout. Climbing requires communication, decision-making and teamwork. It also enhances self-esteem, patience, and perseverance.

The TDRPD has setup many programs to cater to climbers of all ages and abilities. Rock climbing instruction classes for grades first through 12 are offered in six-week intervals on Tuesdays and Thursdays, times vary with age groups.

Hour-long Introduction to Climbing classes are available for ages 14 and above. Classes teach the basics such as proper use of equipment, belay techniques and climbing movement. More programs are currently being developed including a womenand#8217;s class and a Saturdays childrenand#8217;s climb time. To participate in any class, you must register in advance.

Open to public hours are on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Drop-in fees for all ages are $5.

To use the top rope wall, participants must pass a belay test. Schedule your next birthday party at the wall. Parties include two hours of supervised climbing for up to 18 children. Pricing and times vary. Climbing shoe and harness rental is available at the Recreation Center.
