Coldstream Canyon presentation slated for Feb. 12
TRUCKEE, Calif. – The community is invited to join the Truckee River Watershed Council for a presentation on the Coldstream Canyon Floodplain Restoration project on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Cedar House Sport Hotel.
Coldstream Canyon is located in Donner Memorial State Park, adjacent to the Town of Truckee. Current land uses in the canyon include recreation, railroad corridor, timber harvest in the upper watershed, and residential development. Today the majority of the canyon is under the management of the U.S.F.S. Tahoe National Forest and California State Parks.
The Truckee River Watershed Council completed a watershed assessment in 2006 which prioritized several restoration opportunities. In 2012 they began restoration of the lower alluvial fan, in partnership with California State Parks. Channelization of the stream led to incision and severe erosion. The restoration project will reduce pollution from excess sediment, providing both water quality and habitat benefits.
