Familiar food barrels return today to area grocery stores, reminding us to sponsor fellow citizens who need help providing healthy meals for their families. Suggested food lists for seniors and families are available at food barrel locations in Safeway and Albertsons. Truckee’s Community Christmas program is in its eleventh year. Each holiday season, hundreds of families receive food, toys, gifts and clothing for infants through seniors thanks to the generosity of the Truckee community.All food products should be nonperishable with current freshness labels. Health codes prevent us from accepting homemade goods that are canned or baked. Cash donations for the food gift certificate program will be gratefully accepted. For information on the food program, please call Mike Moretti at 550-8964.Toy barrels will appear Dec. 3 at participating banks, real estate offices, businesses and schools. New, unwrapped toys can be placed in bins at all Bank of the West branches, US Bank, Plumas Bank, Bank of America, Safeway, Albertsons, Longs, Rite-Aid, Truckee Travel, Gateway fire station, Prudential California Realty, Coldwell Banker, Century 21, Porter Simon, Sierra Sun, Truckee Elementary, Glenshire Elementary and Tahoe Truckee High School. Wrapping paper, ribbons, tape, bows and gift tags can also be deposited in toy barrels. This year infants and teens are being targeted for toys. Organizers need volunteers to wrap toys several different dates prior to distribution on Dec. 20. Gently worn items may be dropped off in the entryway at Church of the Mountains in downtown Truckee across from the Truckee Donner Community Center. Warm winter coats for adults are also needed. Truckee Tahoe Seniors Council is coordinating the holiday senior gift project. This program benefits needy senior citizens and disabled adults including Meals on Wheels recipients in the Truckee and North Lake Tahoe area. Cash donations are in great demand this year to purchase targeted gifts for families with infants and seniors.
