Community for Cancer Care endowment raises funds to support patient care

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Tahoe Forest Health System created the Community for Cancer Care Endowment to fund high quality and varied services and programs offered through the Tahoe Forest Cancer Center (TFCC) for local cancer patients. All programs and services are funded through philanthropy. Some of them include: Free caregiver education; WeCARE! a community-based cancer peer navigator program providing special support on a one-to-one basis; Exercise for Energy; home health care; free health presentations from TFHS physicians and psycho-social programs, which aim to provide behavioral health and psychological services for those with chronic illness.

The following three components of the Community for Cancer Care Endowment are among the most significant of the Cancer Center expansion and must be funded by outside sources: Patient and family cancer care programs addressing the social, psychological, emotional and functional aspects of a patient and caregivers experience; a sustainability fund to attract and retain cancer care clinicians and oncology equipment to sustain Tahoe Forest Cancer Center, and a general campaign for cancer care to support cancer services within Tahoe Forest Cancer Center.

Tahoe Forest Health System developed the Community for Cancer Care Endowment web site as an educational resource and to offer information about various ways to donate at

and#8220;There is an urgent need to fund the Community for Cancer Care Endowment because it supports services and programs that are beyond the stethoscope. This funding goes toward supportive care services like support groups and movement and exercise education and programs,and#8221; said Martha Simon, chief development officer, Tahoe Forest Health System.

There are many ways to support the Tahoe Forest Cancer Center through the Community for Cancer Care Endowment. Supporters may choose to make a single gift or contribute over a period of time. Gifts will fund local cancer programs, including those subsidized by Tahoe Forest Health System. Options include: Tahoe Forest Cancer Center Naming Opportunities, Circle of Life Naming Opportunities, Gifts of Cash; Appreciated Securities (including closely held stock and mutual funds); Retirement Plans; Mutual Funds; Life Income Plans (including charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and charitable gift annuities); Life Insurance Policies; Bequests; Real Estate; Personal Property; Corporate Matching Gifts; Deferred Gifts and IRA Self-directed Funds.

More than 2,100 cancer patients live in the TFCC geographic service area, and this number is expected to increase dramatically by more than 50 percent over the next 10 years. This increase will result in at least 300 newly diagnosed cancer cases each year. The expanded Tahoe Forest Cancer Center will be able to accommodate most of the increase in patients, but funding through community support is greatly needed for cancer-specific programs and a broader scope of comprehensive cancer care services to local patients.

and#8220;We truly canand#8217;t thank our community enough for its support and generous contributions over the years. Itand#8217;s always overwhelming to see how people pull together,and#8221; said Pam Hobday, chairperson for the Cancer Advisory Council (CAC). and#8220;And, our annual Best of Tahoe Chefs 2011 was another sell-out event! All proceeds from this event support cancer center programs, and we were thrilled that so many people attended.and#8221;

The Cancer Advisory Council (CAC) is a group of volunteers who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication to the enhancement of healthcare in the Truckee/North Lake Tahoe community. The CAC developed a comprehensive ambassador program to engage hundreds of community members to learn about Tahoe Forest Cancer Center and its programs and services. Pam Hobday has been the chair of the community based Cancer Advisory Council for five years.

In 2006, a general obligation bond for Tahoe Forest Hospital District was passed by a 72 percent super majority vote. This outcome demonstrated strong community support for improved local healthcare facilities to meet future and current needs, but some important cancer programs and services are beyond the scope of the GO bond.
