Get hot and support mentoring at the same time. Bikram Yoga Sierra has designated Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada County and North Lake Tahoe as the beneficiary for their January Karma classes, meaning all proceeds from each Tuesday 6:30 p.m. class in Truckee will go to support mentoring in the Truckee-Tahoe area. January also marks the opening of Bikram Yoga Truckeeand#8217;s brand new studio space, so now is the perfect time to try this invigorating form of yoga for the first time, or renew your commitment to your body if youand#8217;ve taken a break!

Bikram yoga is a series of 26 Hatha yoga postures done in a specific order over 90 minutes in a heated room. The series of postures are particularly good in repairing the damage done by the typically stressful American way of life. The heat and#8212; while intimidating to those who have never tried this form of yoga and#8212; actually enhances flexibility and mindfulness over the course of the 90-minute classes. People of all fitness and experience levels find a variety of benefits from Bikram yoga including weight loss, injury healing, immune system improvement, increased flexibility and stress reduction.

Bikram Yoga Sierraand#8217;s Karma class is held once a week at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in Truckee in the Pioneer Commerce Center, 10775 Pioneer Trail Road, Unit 105B (Wednesdays in Reno). Admission is by donation ($8 minimum please), and all proceeds are donated to a different worthy local cause. Call (530) 582-4111 or visit for more information.

As you plan for 2010 and everything the new year has in store, take a moment to think about what you might do in the Tahoe-Truckee community to become more involved. There are literally hundreds of great causes, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada County and North Lake Tahoe for those who want to make a big difference in the life of a local child.

We are always looking for caring adult mentors who are willing to spend an average of an hour a week with a local youth in need of a friend. We ask for a yearand#8217;s commitment (with a flexible schedule), but most matches last much longer because both mentor and mentee get so much out of the relationship. Indeed, many matches grow into life-long friendships that can redefine both lives for the better.

If you would like more information about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, please call our Truckee office today! We currently have more than 30 children on our North Lake Tahoe and Truckee waiting list, and we especially need mentors in the Kings Beach area. Call (530) 587-7717 for more information. Se habla espanol.

We are so grateful to the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation and the Melanie Jackson Fund at the TTCF for their grant to help support our mentoring programs. This grant will help us provide culturally appropriate mentoring services to Hispanic children referred to our services by partially funding a bilingual Customer Relations Specialist position. This position assists the Program Manager with the enrollment of children and volunteers and will focus on working with our Hispanic families to help them through the enrollment, matching, and support processes to ensure that their childrenand#8217;s needs and interests are met. Thank you for all you do to support mentoring and the children in our community!

If you or someone you know would be interested in supporting our local programs by serving on the Truckee-Tahoe Fundraising Committee, volunteering at BBBSNC events, participating on our Board of Directors, or by making a financial contribution, please contact Executive Director Dena Valin at (530) 273-2227 or For more information, please see
