A cold and drizzly Sunday Aug. 29, 41 hardy runners and walkers took part in the inaugural andamp;#8220;Fun Run for Littlesandamp;#8221; race/fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada County and North Lake Tahoe. Participants had the option of running either a 5K or 1-mile course, laid out on the beautiful trails at Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Resort. While conditions were a bit atypical for August andamp;#8212; temperatures in the 40s with a touch of rain andamp;#8212; the runnersandamp;#8217; spirits were high and smiles were everywhere. Taking first place in the under-12 division of the 5K was Bernice Fragoso, while first place in the adult 5K division went to Joan Lewis. Winners in the 1-mile race were Caitlin Smith (accompanied by her father Dwight Smith) in the under-12 division and Jesus Fragoso in the adult division.Sponsors of the event included the Sierra Mentoring Partnership and AAA of California, Nevada and Utah.

Put a team together for what is sure to be the best event of the Halloween season in Tahoe this year: The Bowl For Kidsandamp;#8217; Sake Superhero Bowl, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at Bowl Incline.Bowl For Kidsandamp;#8217; Sake is the signature event of Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the nation, with thousands of bowlers forming teams and supporting the mentoring that Big Brothers Big Sisters makes possible. The inaugural Tahoe edition of this hilarious event will take place the Saturday before Halloween with a superhero theme: The perfect excuse to dress up and have fun bowling with friends and soon-to-be-new-friends.The actual bowling will take place from 5 p.m. to midnight Oct. 23, but the fun starts well in advance as teams compete to out fundraise all others. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada County andamp; North Lake Tahoe is always looking for caring adult mentors who are willing to spend an average of an hour a week with a local youth in need of a friend. We ask for a yearandamp;#8217;s commitment (with a flexible schedule), but most matches last much longer than that because both mentor and mentee get so much out of the relationship. Indeed, many matches grow into life-long friendships that can redefine both lives for the better. If you would like more information about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, please call our Truckee office today. We currently have more than 35 children on our North Lake Tahoe and Truckee waiting list, and we especially need mentors in the Kings Beach area. Call 587-7717 for more information. Se habla espaol.
