If you are planning to visit a California wine region this month you will find many opportunities to participate in annual seasonal events. Many wineries are conducting special holiday events, offering special prices on their wines, rolling out special vintages, and hosting a variety of holiday-themed events.

St. Supery Winery, located at 8440 Highway 28, in Rutherford, will be hosting a month of special tours and tastings on Dec. 9, and again on Dec. 16. They will be conducting behind the scenes winemaking tours, and barrel tasting of their Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot. This tour and tasting will cost $25, and starts at 11a.m. Reservations are required. Call (800) 942-0809, ext. 58.Hahns Faden Vineyards will be hosting candlelit carols in their lakeside, mountain top caves on December 15 and 16. The winery is located at 4855 Petrified Forest Road in Calistoga. The cost is $40 per person and children 10 and older are welcomed. Call (707) 224-4222 for more information. Rounding out the month in Napa you may want to spend New Years Eve at Domaine Chandon at their annual masquerade ball. Call (800) 736-2892 for all the info.

Ledson Winery, located at 7335 Sonoma Highway in Kenwood, will be hosting a variety of food and wine tasting on December 7-9,14-16, and 21-24, from 11a.m. to 4p.m. and explaining why certain wines pair so well with the flavors of different foods. The cost is $25 per person, which gives you chance to win a prize. Call (707) 537-3810 for more information. On the 15th, at Michel-Schlumberger, which produces limited production wines in Healdsburg, there will be a free holiday open house. You will be able to enjoy the festive dcor of this hillside estate while sampling their Estate Cabernet, and Reserve Chardonnay. The open house starts at 1 p.m. both weekends. Call (800) 447-3060. Rodney Strong Vineyards will again conduct their wine tasting for canned goods at their tasting room, which is located at 11455 Old Redwood Highway, Healdsburg. The winery offers wine and food pairings and discounted wines all to benefit the Redwood Empire food bank. Call (707) 431-1533.Alderbrook Winery, at 2306 Magnolia Dr. in Healdsburg, will be holding their annual open house on Dec. 8. from 11a.m.-4 p.m. Wines and foods to sample, great wine deals, and unusual gifts to choose from all for $10. Call (707) 433-5987, ext.2.Ridge Vineyards will be hosting special tastings on the first three Saturdays in December, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For $10, you will be able to sample some of Ridges stellar wines. The winery is located at 650 Lytton Springs Road, Healdsburg. Call (707) 433-7721.

Locally, a visit to one of our exceptional wine shops will offer a chance to taste some wonderful wines and peruse the many seasonal wine-related gift items they have for the wine lovers on your holiday list. Two unique wine shops that are located in two of our stellar destination ski resorts, Earthly Delights in Northstar and Uncorked in Squaw Valley, are worth a visit this month. These two wine shops offer a wide variety of wines to choose from, as well as cozy wine-tasting bars, they both are located in ski resorts that offer fun activities for the entire family. If you want to make a quick weekend getaway to a Sierra Foothills winery, check out Nevada City Winery located on Spring Street in Nevada City, where they offer free tasting of up to six of their great wines, and lots of gift items to choose from in their winery store. On the other side of the hill, check out Sierra Vista Winery and Ursa winery both located in Placerville.
