Decisionmakers: Cathy Preis

Cathy Preis moved to Donner Summit eight years ago because she could afford it.

“I didn’t want to move to Reno,” said Preis. “With the prices then, you could either move up or down [the hill] ” I moved up.”

The Soda Springs resident said she enjoys everything high-mountain living has to offer, including hiking, camping and any outdoor sport that has to do with snow. Not even the 12-mile commute from a harsh winter environment to work bothers the 14-year Truckee local.

“I’d rather wake up and shovel snow than commute in traffic,” she said.

As Plumas Bank’s assistant operations officer, Preis is in charge of all daily operations at the Truckee bank. She said the financial world is rewarding but she wanted another outlet for becoming involved with her community.

“Two years ago a position opened up,” she said of her first foray into public service.

Since Preis now owns several rental properties in the area, she was naturally interested in the development issues taking place on Donner Summit. She said the mountain utility district, which provides drinking water to 279 residences and collects wastewater from up to 765 residents and guests, is in the planning stages for a plant expansion.

Preis said meeting future expectations of development and capacity for existing and new customers are important challenges that decisionmakers like her must face.
