Decisionmakers: Peter Werbel

Peter Werbel moved to the Truckee-Tahoe area without a plan 36 years ago, and has served on the Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District board of directors longer than he can remember.

“I didn’t know what I was going to do, but I knew Truckee was where I was going to live,” Werbel said, recalling his 1971 move to Truckee straight out of college in Denver.

Starting with odd jobs around the area, Werbel quickly established roots in the outdoor recreation world as part owner of Alpenglow Sports, other properties and businesses, and starting the Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski area in its current form, he said.

“I’ve always been athletic and outdoor-minded; it’s been my passion my whole life,” he said

Werbel said running for the park district board was a natural progression to improve outdoor recreation opportunities in the area.

“I fell in love with the Tahoe area, and I’ve had such an incredible life here I wanted to give back to the community, and recs and park fit the person I am,” Werbel said. “I am trying to make rec and parks better for the community.”

Werbel said his objectives on the board include the completion of a new community recreation center, the addition of an aquatic center at the new facility, cultivating and retaining district staff, and the creation of a pavilion on Donner Lake’s West End Beach.

“I want to be conservative in doing this to make sure we are not over budget on the community center,” Werbel said.

As for the future, Werbel said he’s not sure if he will run for another term, but said if the public and his fellow board members will have him, he will likely go for another four years.
