Decisionmakers: Ted Owens

As a founding member of the Contractors Association of Truckee Tahoe, Ted Owens began his political career without knowing he was doing so. His involvement with CATT, as the group has come to be known, led to his appointment on the Truckee Planning Commission, a subsequent seat on Truckee Town Council. And from there, Owens won his seat on the Nevada County board of supervisors.

“I was sworn in on a Monday and on Tuesday was selected unanimously by my peers to serve as board chair,” Owens said.

The intention of his peers in electing him chair of the board immediately, Owens believes, was the need to restore civility in the county board room. Owens credits his mentors in Truckee for his ability to do just that. But his intentions in serving on the board were greater.

“I wanted to raise eastern county’s prominence in Sacramento and western county. I wanted to ensure eastern county received its fair share of return on invested tax dollars,” Owens said.

Recently Owens announced his intention to seek re-election to the county board, despite the position’s demands on his family life, business and personal time.

“I thrive on the intensity of the job,” he said. “It really is 24-seven. My favorite part of the job is solving constituent problems, from development to neighbors who don’t pick up their garbage. I believe I can solve those problems, meet my constituents’ and their unique communities’ needs.”
