TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. – Truckee’s own homegrown brewery, FiftyFifty Brewing Co., recently took home top honors at one of the world’s most prestigious beer competitions.-
The 2012 European Beer Star Awards awarded the Gold Medal in the Wood and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer category to Eclipse Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout Grand Cru from FiftyFifty. In addition to the Gold, FiftyFifty was also honored with the Bronze Medal for their “Iced Eclipse” in the Ultra Strong Beer category.-
The European Beer Star is one of the most recognized beer competitions in the world, committed to the traditional European art of brewing. The competition evaluates the beers on the basis of purely sensory criteria. Judging of the beers was done by an international expert panel at the Doemens Brewing Academy in Gräfelfing near Munich, with more than 100 beer and brewery experts from all over the globe. “We are so proud to represent Truckee this way in the international beer scene!” said brewer Alyssa Shook.
The entire crew at FiftyFifty is incredibly proud of this accomplishment.- “We couldn’t be happier with our results at the European Beer Star,” said fellow brewer Gene Curtin. BrewMaster Todd Ashman added, “For the Eclipse Grand Cru we picked 12 of our favorite barrels ranging from three to 20-years-old with a broad spectrum of robustness, depth, and layered complexity. The 2011 Grand Cru was some of our best barrel aging work!”
The 2012 vintage of Eclipse is due to release to the public on Friday, Dec. 7. “We’ve been sampling the barrels intensively over the past month, and this year’s batch definitely lives up to its stellar reputation,” said co-founder Andy Barr.
In addition to being available for purchase at the brewery, this year Eclipse will be distributed across the globe to eager markets including San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Boston, Japan and others.
