Donner Lake: An issue of public safety

Sierra Sun Editorial

The town has heard from all sides on the Donner Lake watercraft issue, from those who seek to ban all motorized watercraft to those who say travel on the lake is a matter of personal rights.

In the end, Truckee Town Council made the best choice possible – to look at the matter from a public safety perspective and base its actions strictly on the facts, rather than emotional appeals.

Donner Lake is our town’s crown jewel – an irreplaceable resource if it is destroyed by carelessness or neglect. To allow that would be unconscionable.

However, it would also be irresponsible to curtail the rights of watercraft owners unless it’s proven that their craft pose a true threat to the lake.

Drinking water tests on Donner Lake will drive the council decision, and all we can do now is await the results of tests by the Donner Lake Water Co., which will be monitoring the water on a weekly basis.

If water from Donner Lake becomes unfit to drink due to boat traffic, council will take the appropriate steps and restrict access to the lake.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
