TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Letand#8217;s face it; we live in a fast-paced modern world. Children learn to navigate iPhones and DVR remotes before theyand#8217;re even potty trained these days. But there is still something to be said for the way things used to be. At Donner Trail Elementary School, theyand#8217;ve got all that modern technology, but the learning philosophy is definitely and#8220;old school.and#8221;

Donner Trail Elementary is truly an old-fashioned two-room schoolhouse. The school serves about 75 kids from throughout the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. The compact layout works perfectly with the schooland#8217;s multi-age learning philosophy. There are only three classes and three teachers. Each class is made up of students from two different grade levels. The multi-age approach fosters a spirit of cooperation and provides unique learning opportunities for students at every grade level.

The Donner Trail Parent Teacher Organization is a very active supporter of programs at the school. The PTO helps to fund educational field trips, an afternoon kindergarten enrichment program, a school-wide music program, and other and#8220;extrasand#8221; like a climbing wall in the gym, Nordic ski equipment and snowshoes for wintertime physical education classes, performing arts programs and more.

The PTOand#8217;s biggest fundraiser, the annual Thanksgiving Dinner, provides funding for these and many other programs. This year marks the 28th annual Thanksgiving Dinner, which will be held at the Sugar Bowl Ski Resortand#8217;s Judah Lodge Saturday, Nov. 6, 5 p.m. In addition to a hearty Thanksgiving meal, there will be a raffle with lots of great prizes generously donated by area businesses and a silent auction. The event is not just for parents and students. It is a community event, and all are welcome and encouraged to attend!
