Dream Big: READ Summer Reading Program
Special to the Sun
TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; As the school year winds down to a close, thoughts inevitably turn to the lazy, hazy, and sometimes crazy days of summer. The Truckee Library has the perfect way to celebrate that first day of summer vacation. Come on down to the library to sign up for our annual summer reading program. Regular readers of this space already know those long, lazy days of summer pose a risk for school-aged children called and#8220;summer brain drain.and#8221; Research has shown if your childand#8217;s brain remains stagnant without challenge over the summer months, they could lose, on average, 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in math skills and nearly a whole reading level. While the summer reading program might not help with math skills, it will definitely preserve and even improve reading levels!
This yearand#8217;s theme is Dream Big: READ. Children, ages 5 to 12, who sign up for the program will receive a special theme-related bookmark and a reading record with stickers to keep track of each 30 minutes of reading they do this summer. For every five hours of reading logged, participants will earn a prize. If participants complete 25 hours of reading, they will earn the grand prize: a gift certificate to the Bookshelf at Hooligan Rocks!
The library will hold four free special events throughout the summer on Wednesday afternoons for our reading program participants, including a professional magic show with Bill the Magician in June, multi-cultural storytelling with Izzi Tooinsky in July, and two live animal programs in August. Perennial favorites, Wild Things, Inc. will return with a winsome group of wild animals to share and NorCal Bat Rescue will introduce bats to the library, in honor of this yearand#8217;s nocturnal theme.
Also, back by popular demand for the seventh year in a row is the and#8220;Find the Hidden Bookand#8221; contest that will take place from June 19 to Aug. 15. Each day a gift-wrapped book will be hidden on the shelves somewhere in the childrenand#8217;s wing. The first summer reading program participant to find the book will receive a prize.
New this year will be a summer storytime session for the preschool set. Normally, storytimes are on hiatus during the summer months. This summer we will try something new. From June 26 to Aug. 14, preschoolers can enjoy summer stories on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
As always, we would like to give an extra-special thank you to the Friends of the Truckee Library for their generous funding for summer reading program materials, prizes and entertainment and to the Bookshelf at Hooligan Rocks for their awesome gift certificates. They each help make the experience so much richer for our program participants. We couldnand#8217;t do it without their generous support.
So mark your calendars now and plan to drop by the Truckee Library when school lets out to sign up for Dream Big: READ. Itand#8217;s a great way for our kids to continue developing their reading skills over the summer months!
