Evil eyes and the really scary things about Halloween

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. – Forget the fake blood and ghoulish costumes – I’ll tell you what’s really scary about Halloween. It’s the swapping out of the summer clothes for your winter gear. The act itself isn’t so bad. It’s the having to look at how many of those carefully planned outfits you didn’t wear during the warm season.

Even more frightening when you find yourself putting them into storage “for next year.” You know what else is really scary about Halloween? How quickly you break your resolve “not to eat any trick or treat candy.” Somewhere around Labor Day you find yourself purchasing a bag of mini (right) Almond Joys knowing everyone in your household hates coconut.

You know what else is really scary about Halloween? Its arrival coincides with the year’s first snowfall, and suddenly you decide you must bake, even if it just scoops from a huge tub of Nestle’s Cookie Dough. (Killer.) Why? Because you know with your Burka line of winter coats you can get away with a few more pounds.

That is, until it starts all over again next summer. And you know the only thing really scary about those Halloween movies? Jamie Lee Curtis looks better now than she did 30 years ago. This is a woman who probably swaps out her annual summer clothes because she was so active they got too big for her.

Lychee Evil Eyes

Ingredients:

3 15 oz. cans peeled, whole lychees in heavy syrup (I got mine at Village Market in Incline)

1 cup whole, roasted almonds

1 8 oz. package cream cheese

red food coloring

Preparation: Drain lychees and pat dry before placing them in large bowl. Put almonds in a smaller bowl and the cream cheese on a plate. This is your assembly line. Using a very small spoon or a chop stick, fill a lychee whole with about 1/4 tablespoon cream cheese and then insert an almond.

Pointed in first, so it protrudes out just enough to look like an eye. Next, take the red food coloring and very lightly touch the tip of the bottle to around the almond area of the “eye.” Repeat. Each 15 ounce can of Lychees has about 20 whole fruits, so you will end up with 60 eyes on a platter. Be sure to arrange them frightfully.
