Experts andamp; Insights at Sierra College: What’s Next for Our Economy?

Each recent decade seems to have a slogan that relates to our nation’s financial wealth and productivity. In the 1980s, it was andamp;#8220;Reaganomics.andamp;#8221; The presidential campaign of the 1990s was defined by andamp;#8220;it’s the economy, stupid,andamp;#8221; and Y2K ushered in andamp;#8220;The Digital Economy.andamp;#8221; What label should be coined to describe our current economic times? Professor Thomas Harris will offer insight as he presents his mid-year economic analysis and forecast for the nation and our region Friday, June 11 at andamp;#8220;Experts andamp; Insights,andamp;#8221; a free lecture/discussion program in the Sierra College Dean’s Lecture Series. Each month, a different topic is examined from an academic viewpoint. Faculty and guest speakers share their passion for research and provide a stimulating venue for exploration and thought-provoking dialog.Dr. Kim Bateman, Dean of Sierra College, notes most Experts andamp; Insights speakers’ academic backgrounds encourage them to probe deeply into their subject and pose questions rather than just presenting facts and figures at face value. For example, along with his analysis of employment, personal income, industry earnings and other economic indicators, Harris will explain how economic forecasts go wrong and give his perspective on why economists agree and disagree.Upcoming presentations include Lori Van Meter on andamp;#8220;Memorial Art at Burning Manandamp;#8221; (July 9), Dr. Kim Bateman on andamp;#8220;Mythical Guide to GriefWorkandamp;#8221; (Aug. 13), and Dr. Nan Carnal on andamp;#8220;Photosynthesis: How Plants Do It and Important Consequencesandamp;#8221; (Sept. 10). Dr. Thomas R. Harris is a Foundation Professor in the Department of Resource Economics in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources; State Extension Specialists in Community and Economic Development in University of Nevada Cooperative Extension; and the Director of the University Center for Economic Development at the University of Nevada, Reno. Dr. Harris has been at UNR since 1981 and his primary areas of teaching, research and extension are rural economic development, economic impact modeling, and local government finance. Dr. Harris has served the department as interim department head on two occasions. Dr. Harris has several ongoing projects in rural Nevada communities through the University Center for Economic Development.
