Experts & Insights at Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee: Geologic carbon dioxide storage May 6

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. – Sierra College has rescheduled Dr. John Henry Beyer’s presentation, “Geologic CO2 Storage to Address Global Warming” for Friday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m., 11001 College Trail, Truckee. Beyer will refer to the growing consensus that increases in CO2 concentrations are disrupting the earth’s climate, causing sea level to rise enough to flood low-lying coastal regions, and damaging sensitive ecosystems. As one of several potential technologies to address this problem, he will describe how trapping CO2 deeply underground has quickly advanced from a mere concept to a reality, and what remains to be accomplished before widespread application of this technology is possible. Risks, concerns, cost, monitoring of CO2 in the ground, and regulatory and legal issues will be considered.John Henry Beyer, Ph.D., is a geophysicist in the Earth Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and is the Program Manager for the West Coast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (WESTCARB), a Department of Energy-industry collaborative conducting research in CO2 storage. Experts & Insights is offered at no charge, thanks to the generosity of the speakers and Sierra College. The public is invited, but reservations are requested at 530-550-2290 as space is limited.
