Find your spot in the Sierra Sun

Jody Poe
Sierra Sun

Last week in an unusual fit of neatness, I cleaned out the basement closet. Now, I don’t have to tell you what one would find in the basement closet do I? We all have them in some form. Among the snow clothes, boots, puzzles, old golf clubs, mismatched mittens, college biology texts, high school yearbooks and chia pets, I found my photo boxes and scrapbooks. Among the photos and scraps were several newspaper clippings. It was a variety of high school athletic scores and 4-H results or clippings about prom royalty, graduation, engagement and the birth of our son. All together they represent a historic timeline of my life.

Seeing those clippings reminded me that the Sierra Sun has the opportunity to be a part of Truckee and North Tahoe’s collective scrapbook.

One of the missions of a community newspaper like ours is to chronicle life’s events in print. We should be the venue for capturing photos, names, results and life events that will live in scrapbooks and shoe-boxes for the future generations to enjoy and poke fun at. (You should see the big hair in my high school clippings, yikes.)

Beyond the normal birth listings and obituaries carried in our pages, beyond the sports scores and list of graduates, I’d like to have more photos ” the names and faces of life’s events. I would like to have more photos than the ones that we shoot. What I’d really like is for you to bring by or e-mail the photos of your milestones to us for publication. I would like everyone to participate in this venture, locals, visitors, part-time residents, young, old and in between. This is your community paper and you are welcome to be a bigger part of it. We’ll capture your submissions in our space called Faces and Places, daily, weekly, whatever. We’ll publish as many as you send us.

Here’s a little food for thought to get you motivated. Photos you submit might include: preschool or school graduation, your pets, school plays, school events, sporting events, little league, the bowling team, golf foursome, day on the boat, motorbike ride or race, friends on the town, family outings, engagements, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, births, travel photos, college related photos and so on. You get the idea.

Send your digital photos with name, phone and who’s in the pic to yourphotos@sierrasun.com.
