Friends of the Library: Donate to the library’s annual sale

Pam McAdoo, Sierra Sun

If you’re dreaming about simplifying your life by getting rid of some things you neither need nor use, now is the perfect time to rummage through shelves, closets, garages, storage units and cupboards for things to donate for the annual used book sale sponsored by the Friends of the Library, which this year will be held Saturday, Aug. 4.

For some, this is a great opportunity to sort through books, videos and audiotapes that are merely taking up space, and pack up a box of treasures to be distributed to new homes.

For most of the year, the Friends do not have enough space to store donations for the sale. Unused spaces in the Joseph Center and Tahoe Forest Hospital have been used for storage in the past. In the last two years, the Friends have rented a storage unit which devours a space in the parking lot for the month before the sale and provides a good, weather-tight place to collect, sort and store donated books.

Now, almost two weeks before the sale, there is still room to accommodate more donations. If you’ve never before attended the Friends book sale, be assured that there are many valuable specimens to be discovered. From poetry, travel, and cookbooks, Internet resources and videos to children’s books, historical novels, first editions, philosophical treatises and foreign language primers, the sale offers something for everyone.

The Best Western Truckee Tahoe Inn and Tahoe Forest Hospital generously loan folding tables for the sale, which is staffed by community volunteers and the Friends of the Library. Books are mounded on the tables on the porch, in the parking lot, in the garden, and anywhere else they fit.

The sale begins promptly at 9 a.m. – and not a minute sooner – and lasts until 4 p.m. Watch for unbeatable bargains towards the end of the sale, and come prepared to discover a variety of books and tapes that you simply can’t live without!
