Friends of the Library: New books on health at Truckee Library

With all the old tried and true book friends in the collection in constant need of check-in, cleaning, mending and re-shelving, it’s easy to overlook the new books that arrive periodically after a protracted process of ordering, cataloging, and shipping.

After a few weeks on display, new arrivals eventually make their way into the regular collection and can then be accessed through the computerized cataloging system. But while they’re hot off the press and still in a pristine state, they claim a place of honor on the shelf with the Friends of the Library’s Bestseller Collection.

Brand new to the collection is a variety of non-fiction titles, many of which address health and wellness subjects.

“Childhood Cancer: A Handbook from St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital,” by Grant Steen, Ph.D. and Joseph Mirro, M.D., is a comprehensive and compassionate guide to diagnosing, treating and surviving childhood cancer.

Archibald D. Hart’s “Unmasking Male Depression” is a guide to recognizing the root cause to many problem behaviors such as anger, resentment, abusiveness, silence, addictions and sexual compulsions, written by a professor of psychology and former dean at the Graduate School of Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena.

“The Loss of Self: A Family Resource for the Care of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders,” by Donna Cohen, Ph.D. and Carl Eisdorfer, M.D, Ph.D., offers understanding, help and affirmation for those involved with Alzheimer’s.

Robert and Michele Root-Bernstein explain that wives’ tales and folk remedies provide the basis for many modern-day medical practices, and call on the medical establishment to open up to the possibilities of alternative therapies in their new book, “Honey, Mud, Maggots, and Other Medical Marvels.”

Several new books are based on the practices of yoga.

“The Tree Path: Western Science and the Quest for Yoga,” by Roy J. Matthew, M.D., offers an unusual approach by a clinical scientist to treating substance abuse through the use of meditative practice such as yoga. Using recent neurological findings, the author explains that the substitution of Zen-like states can be successfully substituted for mind-altering drugs.

The founder of the American Yoga Foundation, Alice Christensen, promotes the use of yoga to keep joints flexible and the mind relaxed, reduce dependence on pain medication, fight depression, and create a diet that helps reduce arthritis symptoms in her book, “Arthritis: The Powerful Program for Greater Flexibility, Strength, and Freedom.”

“Healing Yoga: A Guide to Integrating the Chakras with your Yoga Practice” illustrates all asanas with clear, step-by-step color photographs. Author Swami Ambikananda Saraswati also discusses how to develop an awareness of imbalance within the body.

Publishing Workshop Series:

The Library and Bookshelf Stores will again offer a workshop series with local authors, editors, illustrators and publishers on Wednesday evenings at 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Library.

Oct. 24: Romance fiction writer Jill Shalvis

Nov. 7: Robert Frohlich, author of Skiing with Style

The $10 fee will compensate the presenter and benefit the Friends. Space is limited; call the Library to reserve a place.

— Toddlertime with Teri, for ages 18 to 36 months. Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.

— Babes In Bookland: An Infant Lap-sit Program for ages 6-18 months. Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.

— Saturday Storytelling With Mrs. Fix. For ages 3-6. Saturdays at 10:30 a.m.
