Friends of the Truckee Library Winter Reading Program: Chill out and read!
Special to the Sun
As the days continue to shorten accompanied by that distinctive chill in the air, itand#8217;s the perfect time once again to settle down by the fire and curl up with a good book.
It is also that time of the year when the Truckee Library kicks off its annual Winter Reading Program for children ages 5 and up. Designed not to interfere with school projects and reading, the winter reading program is much more low-keyed than its summer counterpart. Participants are encouraged to read a total of five books during a three-month period, which includes the holiday breaks and ski/skate week. Our theme this year is and#8220;Chill Out and Read!and#8221;
Participants will receive a theme-related reading records, stickers and bookmarks when they come to the library to sign up.
Sign-ups start this week and the program runs through the end of February. When they sign-up, children will receive a theme-related reading record and stickers to help them keep track of their reading, along with a bookmark.-
In past years, when weand#8217;ve required participants to read books from a specific genre (e.g. historical fiction, fantasies, mysteries, etc.), our completion rates suffered. This year we will let the children decide what they want to read instead.
Upon completion of the program in February, those who read five books will be awarded with a certificate of completion, a book of their own choosing in a theme-related book bag and an invitation to an after-hours party at the library.
So celebrate the season that Truckee is best known for by visiting the library to sign up for the Truckee Libraryand#8217;s and#8220;Chill Out and Readand#8221; winter reading program.
What better way to enjoy an evening curled up by the fire than with a really good book? Itand#8217;s a great habit to instill in our children at a young age and an excellent antidote to their screen-intensive world of television, computers, and video games.
